State lawmakers vote to finally spell ‘Verrazzano’ correctly

ALBANY — The bridge connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn will now be spelled Z right way.

The Assembly passed a bill Tuesday to correct the spelling of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which, for decades has been missing one “Z” because of a typo in the construction contract.

Lawmakers also inserted a clause stating that road signs with the misspelled name would be replaced only when they wear out, not immediately.

That measure was inserted after The Post reported that Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, who represents both sides of the span, questioned spending money on the switch. It cost $4 million to change the name of the Triborough Bridge to the RFK Bridge in 2008.

The state Senate passed the bill on Monday.

“In response to your article, they changed it so it’s only ceremonial,” said Malliotakis. “Signs will be changed only as replacement is needed.”
