Matthew Stafford gives update on wife Kelly’s progress after brain surgery

Matthew Stafford is appreciative for the unyielding support he and wife Kelly have received as she continues to recover from brain surgery.

Appearing on “The Mitch Albom Show” Wednesday, the Lions quarterback said Kelly is doing well since undergoing a 12-hour procedure to remove a tumor.

“She’s doing good,” Stafford said. “I think she’s kind of right where the doctors want her to be at this point of her recovery. We appreciated everybody’s well wishes, thoughts, prayers, all that. People have been really supportive and I know she and I really appreciate it.”

Kelly returned home after the procedure in early April, but she checked back in to the hospital shortly after due to pain. Last week, she posted a touching message to the doctor, whom she credits for saving her life.

As Stafford readies for his 11th season in the league, he’s looking forward to what 2019 has in store for the Lions.

“It’s great to be back, working with the guys. Obviously, meeting a bunch of new teammates. We got a bunch of really good players through free agency and then some young guys we just picked up in the draft who are trying to make a name for themselves,” Stafford said.

“Every year is a different year, a new team and a bunch of new guys to get to know and try to be as good as we possibly can. That’s part of what makes this game so fun.”
