Darren Criss is returning to Broadway in next year’s revival of “American Buffalo,” starring Laurence Fishburne and Sam Rockwell.
Criss, 32, will play Bobby, a young man enlisted to help junk shop owner Don Dubrow (Fishburne), who wants to steal a valuable coin collection, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Rockwell will play their accomplice, Teach.
Criss confirmed the move in a heartfelt post on Twitter Thursday morning. “All I wanted when I started acting was to one day perform the works of America’s greatest playwrights,” he wrote, referring to David Mamet, the show’s author. “If I got lucky, I could do it with America’s greatest actors. If I got REALLY lucky… maybe I could do both on BWAY- with my FAVORITE actors. I’m beside myself”
Of course, Criss — who last starred on Broadway in 2015 in the revival of John Cameron Mitchell’s “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” — had already teased his plans in a cryptic tweet on Wednesday, saying, “I try to get back on the boards every 2-3 years… so wouldn’t you say it’s right about time?”
Criss made his Broadway debut as J. Pierrepont Finch in the 2012 musical “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” replacing Tony nominee Daniel Radcliffe in the role.
The former “Glee” star earned both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of serial killer Andrew Cunanan in the 2018 FX drama “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.”
“American Buffalo” will begin previews at Circle in the Square Theatre — currently housing the revival of “Oklahoma!” — on March 24, 2020, with its official opening set for April 14, 2020.
