A GoFundMe account was launched — and apparently abandoned — to benefit the man charged in the death of a New Jersey woman who authorities said died during a rough sex romp.
The fundraising campaign sought to garner $20,000 to be used toward “fair representation” for 21-year-old suspect Michael Gaffney, the Hackensack Daily Voice reported.
“We are raising money so that Mike gets fair representation in a world where the media is able to spin anything to match their agenda,” the campaign, put up by Gaffney’s 22-year-old sister, Samantha Gaffney, reportedly read.
The GoFundMe — which, according to the outlet, had raised more than $6,000 by Sunday night — had apparently been taken down by Tuesday.
Michael Gaffney, a Maywood, NJ resident, was charged with reckless manslaughter in the early Saturday death of Francis Victoria Garcia, also of Maywood.
Court documents show that the two had met through mutual friends and talked via social media before they planned to attend a raucous Halloween party Friday night.
At some point early Saturday, the two left the party on the 14th floor of a luxury high-rise apartment complex in Hackensack to “hang out” in Garcia’s car in a parking garage, the court documents say.
As the two had sex in the back seat of the car, Gaffney choked Garcia, according to the court papers.
When Garcia passed out Gaffney called his friend to come down to the car, prosecutors charge.
“I choked her. She wanted to be choked,” Gaffney told his friend, according to the court documents.
Officials said that Garcia, whose blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit, was in the back seat of her car with Gaffney at the time of her death.
Gaffney told investigators that the two had taken prescription medication and were having rough sex when Garcia lost consciousness, a law enforcement source told the Hackensack Daily Voice.
An autopsy determined that Garcia’s death was caused by compression injuries to her neck.
