Isaiah Thomas suspended after confronting fan angered by missing Wendy’s Frosty

Isaiah Thomas’ confrontation with a fan, as innocuous as it ultimately was, still drew punishment from the NBA.

The league suspended the Washington Wizards guard Sunday for two games without pay for going into the stands Saturday night in Philadelphia to confront a fan Thomas claims gave him two middle fingers and said, “F— you, b—h,” three times. The fan was mad, Thomas said, because Thomas cost 76ers fans a free Wendy’s Frosty.

“NBA rules state that any player who deliberately enters the spectator stands during a game will be automatically ejected and subjected to a fine and/or suspension,” the league said in a statement. “This bright-line rule is intended to prevent altercations or other hostile interactions between players and fans, for the benefit of both, and is therefore enforced even in circumstances such as these when the encounter between Thomas and fans did not escalate.”

The 76ers have a promotion that gives fans a free Frosty if an opposing player misses both shots during a set of free-throw attempts in the third or fourth quarter. Late in the fourth quarter Saturday, Thomas, 30, missed his first attempt at the line, but made his second, setting a fan off. During the next timeout, Thomas confronted the fan and was then ejected. Thomas said the fan told him, “I’m sorry, I just wanted a Frosty.”

Two fans have been banned by the 76ers for a year, while the season ticketholder who gave the fans the seats had their tickets revoked.

“I’m not stupid. I’m not about to go in no stands and beat nobody up. I was raised better than that,” Thomas said. “That’s a word we don’t use where I come from.”

Thomas is averaging 13.6 points and 4.8 assists per game after signing a one-year, $2.3 million deal with the Wizards.
