Hilary Duff posted on Instagram asking Disney+ to move the reboot of her show “Lizzie McGuire” to Hulu, where the story wouldn’t have to live under a “PG rating.”
“Was incredibly excited to launch ‘Lizzie’ on D+ and my passion remains! However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with LIZZIE who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her,” Duff wrote.
“I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating. It’s important to me that just as her experiences as a preteen / teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable. It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu, if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again <3.”
The original series ran for 65 episodes over two seasons from 2001-2004, with a theatrical film in 2003.
The former child star, 32, made the public plea Friday night, after hinting about possible drama behind the scenes only days prior.
On Wednesday, Duff, who is co-executive producing the show, shared a screenshot of a story about Disney+ moving the “Love, Simon” spin off series from their platform to Hulu after they deemed it not family-friendly. Duff circled that phrase and commented, “sounds familiar.”
Disney purchased Hulu in May 2019.
This week, Wall Street analysts said that the lack of adult programs available on Disney+ will cause a lag in new subscribers.
This is not the first sign of disagreement on set. Original showrunner Terri Minsky backed out of the project in January, halting production after two episodes.
“After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show,” a Disney rep said at the time. “Fans have a sentimental attachment to ‘Lizzie McGuire’ and high expectations for a new series.”
Many of the original cast members were set to reprise their original roles, including Adam Lamberg as best friend Gordo, Hallie Todd and Robert Carradine as Lizzie’s parents and Jake Thomas as Lizzie’s younger brother Matt.
