Knicks big man Mitchell Robinson has a personal question if the NBA doesn’t restart the regular season this year due to coronavirus.
“Does this mean I broke the FG record for the season?” Robinson tweeted late Sunday night.
The second-year center was leading the NBA with a .742 field-goal percentage when the league shut down last week because of the spreading COVID-19 pandemic. Robinson’s figure would eclipse Wilt Chamberlain’s all-time mark for a single season, .727 with the 1972-73 Lakers.
The 21-year-old Robinson admitted earlier this month that he didn’t “really know much” about Chamberlain. The Hall of Famer led the NBA in field-goal percentage 10 times and averaged 30.1 points per game over a 14-year NBA career (including a record 50.4 ppg in 1961-62 for the Philadelphia Warriors). The 1972-73 season, in which Wilt the Stilt established the record for the Lakers, was the final year of his career.
“I don’t really watch old-school basketball. I don’t even know why, it’s just not me,” Robinson said on March 1. “We don’t even play like that anymore, so what’s the point of watching?”
Robinson has made 253 of 341 attempts from the floor this season, mostly on dunks and shots from inside the paint. NBA rules stipulate a player needs a minimum of 300 made field goals to qualify for the title, but those numbers could be prorated based on a shortened schedule.
