Activist suffers ruptured testicle from police rubber bullet

A California man who works with his local police department to do bias training was shot in the groin with a riot gun at a demonstration last week — and suffered a ruptured testicle, a report said Tuesday.

Derrick Sanderlin was fired upon by officers from the San Jose police department while trying to stop the cops from shooting rubber bullets at protesters near city hall last week, a local FOX affiliate reported.

The community activist said he was walking toward a line of cops with his hands up after the officers had hit children and women with rubber bullets at the demonstration.

“I stepped into the line of fire, and a couple of cops said, ‘Move.’ I said, with my hands up, ‘I can’t do that. Please don’t do this,’” Sanderlin told The Mercury News.

On officer then fired a riot gun, hitting Sanderlin square in the groin from about 15 feet away, according to the report.

He suffered a ruptured testicle and had to undergo surgery for the injury caused by the blow.

In a statement, Police Chief Eddie Garcia said the department would investigate the use of force.

“Derrick has been a real leader in our communities’ efforts to reduce bias and discrimination through dialogue,” Garcia said.

“I assured him we will be investigating this incident,” he added.
