Tony Award nominations 2020: The complete list

Broadway may be closed, but the 2020 Tony Awards will go on.

“What, you didn’t think we were gonna have the Tony Awards?” said the event’s host, James Monroe Iglehart. “Of course we’re going to have the Tony Awards. It’s just going to be a little different.

“Theater will always survive.”

Nominations for the award show that celebrates the best of New York theater were announced Thursday and had a different vibe than usual. None of the nominated plays or musicals have performed in seven months, since Broadway shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The earliest possible date they will resume is June 1, 2021 — by a long-shot the lengthiest hiatus in Broadway history.

Still, the Tonys will go ahead, honoring a truncated season as many of the planned spring shows — “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Six” and “Plaza Suite,” among them — have not opened yet, and some — “West Side Story,” “Girl From The North Country” — opened too late.

At least one nominee can start writing his winner’s speech: Aaron Tveit, the star of “Moulin Rouge,” is the only person in the best actor category.

The 74th Annual Tony Awards will air on a to-be-announced date on CBS.
