‘Eternals’ trailer: Watch the star-studded Marvel sneak peek
Here’s some more Phase Four.
The teaser trailer for Marvel Studio’s “Eternals” dropped Monday, introducing viewers to a whole new ragtag crew in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — a group of aliens who have been living on Earth secretly for thousands of years.
“We have watched,” Salma Hayek’s Ajak, the leader of the Eternals, says in a dramatic narration. “Unguided, we have helped them progress. And seen them accomplish wonders. Throughout the years, we have never interfered … until now.”
Hayek is joined by Angelina Jolie as Thena, a warrior; Richard Madden as Ikaris, who can fly; Kumail Nanjiani — who got a new buff bod for the film — as Kingo, a Bollywood star who can summon cosmic energy; Gemma Chan as Sersi, who has the power to change objects with her mind; and Kit Harington as Dane, a human fighter. Brian Tyree Henry plays Phastos, a techie Eternal and the first gay Marvel superhero on-screen.
Notably, “Eternals” is the first Marvel film to be helmed by a Best Director Oscar winner. That’s Chloé Zhao of “Nomadland,” which also took home the Best Picture prize this year. Kenneth Branagh, who directed 2011’s “Thor,” was nominated for Best Director in 1990 for “Henry V,” but lost to Oliver Stone for “Born On The Fourth of July.”
Zhao has definitely retained her epic and nature-lovin’ style, even with a much bigger Disney budget.
Some shots in the trailer are dead ringers for moments in “Nomadland,” like when what appear to be shrouded ancient earthlings look off into the horizon.
“Eternals” hits theaters Nov. 5.
After a number of delays due to the pandemic (“Eternals” was originally set to be released in November 2020), Marvel is back in full force this year. “Black Widow,” starring Scarlett Johansson is out July 9, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” debuts Sept. 3 and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” begins Dec. 17.
