Mike D’Antoni joining Pelicans as coaching consultant

After leaving the Nets coaching staff, Mike D’Antoni has found his next endeavor.

The two-time NBA Coach of the Year will join Willie Green’s staff in New Orleans as a coaching consultant, the team announced Wednesday.

Jarron Collins, who served on the Warriors’ staff, also will head to the Pelicans as an assistant coach.

D’Antoni, who was an assistant with the Nets last season, has compiled a 672-527 record as a head coach.

“This is a cohesive group of high-character individuals with diverse backgrounds and skill sets,” Green said in a statement. “I’m confident that their coaching and playing experience at the highest professional and collegiate levels, combined with their work ethic and team-focused approach, will help build the foundation we need.”

After a stint as an interim head coach for the Denver Nuggets in 1999, he became a full-time head coach for the Suns in 2003 and helped develop his seven-second offense that helped transform offenses across the league.

D’Antoni also had head-coaching gigs with the Lakers (2012-14), Rockets (2016-20), and the Knicks (2009-12).

D’Antoni had a 121-167 record as the Knicks coach, making the playoffs just once. He resigned 42 games into the 2011-12 season after clashing with Carmelo Anthony.

D’Antoni has reached the playoffs 10 times as a head coach and made the conference finals on three occasions. He has had plenty of experience in secondary roles having been an assistant coach on four teams and as an associate with the 76ers in 2015-16.
