Mets game postponed, helping with starting pitching problem

The Mets did not have a regular starting pitcher to use on Monday, but ended up not having a game to throw in anyway.

The series opener between the Mets and Cardinals was postponed due to impending storms. It will be made up on Tuesday as part of a single-admission doubleheader, beginning at 3:10 p.m.

Taijuan Walker and long man Trevor Williams will start the two games, though the Mets did not announce who would start which one.

Williams had been set to make a spot start Monday night, which was supposed to be Tylor Megill’s day in the rotation before he landed on the injured list Sunday with right biceps tendinitis.

Now, the Mets will be able to call up a 27th man for the doubleheader, which is likely to be another arm to add insurance in the bullpen behind Williams. Adonis Medina, who has thrown 3 ²/₃ scoreless innings in two stints with the Mets this season, could be an option to be called up from Triple-A Syracuse after last pitching three innings on Thursday.

David Peterson, who started Friday for Syracuse, is a candidate to replace Megill in the rotation his next time around.

Former Mets lefty Steven Matz is expected to start one of Tuesday’s games for the Cardinals, with Miles Mikolas a candidate to start the other game.

Pedro Martinez informed the Mets on Monday that he will be attending Old-Timers’ Day on Aug. 27, according to vice president of alumni relations Jay Horwitz.

The event, which will be the Mets’ first Old-Timers’ Day since 1994, is also expected to include Mike Piazza, Robin Ventura, Jon Matlack, Ron Swoboda, Daniel Murphy, Billy Wagner, Howard Johnson and 88-year-old original Met Ken MacKenzie, among others.
