‘Amazin’ But True’ Podcast Episode 129: Carlos Correa is the Icing on the Cake to Mets’ Historic, Championship Offseason

I woke up Wednesday morning and turned over to check my phone to see several texts, tweets and lots of excitement. I thought I was still in a dream. It didn’t seem like my eyes were fully open and I was reading what I was seeing right.

The Mets signed Carlos Correa to a 12-year, $315 million deal.

WHAT?

For an offseason that already has been the greatest in the history of the Mets franchise, this was the icing on the cake. Steve Cohen does not care about the luxury tax. All he wants is to put the best possible roster together to win a championship. Signing Carlos Correa was the icing on the cake for a team that should undoubtedly be the favorites on paper to win the World Series.

With Correa joining the Mets for the next dozen years, you know Nelson Figueroa and I had to record another emergency episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast. We react to the huge deal, the re-signing of Adam Ottavino and why the Mets have built something truly special for years to come.

Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:

  • CORREA THE ICING ON CAKE: Nobody saw it coming. We thought the Mets may sign someone to a one-year deal to be a DH/utility man. Instead, they went out and casually signed one of the best players in the sport. It’s incredible how he fell into the Mets lap after the deal with the Giants fell through.
  • LINEUP: Mets lineup is stacked from top to bottom. They have lots of depth and will have intriguing decisions to make at catcher and DH. Do Francisco Alvarez and Omar Narvaez split time? Is it Narvaez and Tomas Nido? Does James McCann get traded? How do the Mets split up DH time? These are all great problems to have and the Mets bench will be stacked.
  • ROTATION/BULLPEN: Kodai Senga already has won over Mets fans before even pitching. He could end up being a bargain at $15 million a year as the Mets no. 3 starter. Adam Ottavino re-signing was a no brainer for the Mets. He was elite last season and joining David Robertson to set up Edwin Diaz makes the Mets bullpen strong as anyone in baseball.
  • CHAMPIONSHIP-OR-BUST: This roster on paper is the best in baseball. The goal should be a World Series title-or-bust in 2023. They have invested too much money into this team for anything less. What an incredible time to be a fan of the Mets. Steve Cohen has built something truly special in Queens.
