Michigan woman receives college diploma at graduation while in labor

A Michigan woman’s Mother’s Day will be extra special this year- she graduated from college and had a baby, almost on the same day.

Kelsey Hudie wanted her diploma so badly that she attended her graduation ceremony while in the early stages of labor.

The Henry Ford College graduate was 38 weeks pregnant and dilated when she showed up to the event last Saturday.

“I was like nothing is going to stop me, even if I have the baby and have to hold her in my arms,” she told Fox 2 Detroit.

The Dearborn resident, who studied liberal arts and has plans to become a teacher, got the news that she was on her way to giving birth four days prior.

“On the Tuesday before we graduated, they said that I was dilated two or three times, so that wasn’t going to stop me from walking across the stage,” she told Click On Detroit.

Once faculty at the community college learned of the situation, they allowed Hudie to sit on stage and called her name earlier in the program than initially planned.

“I have to tell you, I wasn’t planning to speak this early in our commencement,” said college President Russell A. Kavalhuna to the crowd gathered.

After receiving her diploma, Hudie went straight to the hospital.

She finally gave birth to her baby girl Nyla on Monday.
