Fugitive accused of ditching murdered girlfriend in Boston airport arrested in Kenya

The man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death before dumping her body at a Boston airport before hopping on a flight out of the country was arrested at a nightclub in Kenya, Massachusettes state police announced Tuesday.

Kevin Kangethe, 41, was busted by the country’s authorities Monday — three months after cops found the slashed body of Margaret “Maggie” Mbitu abandoned in a garage at Logan airport.

Mbitu’s family reported her missing on Oct. 30, two days before officials made the gruesome discovery in the Central Parking lot.

The 31-year-old nurse was found with massive slash wounds to her face and neck, as well as other puncture wounds to her sides, with officers noting she showed “obvious signs of death.”

The car, registered to Kangethe, was covered in blood, police noted. Cops quickly determined Kangethe was a suspect, but he had already left the country for Kenya.

Police did not reveal a motive for the brutal slaying, but Mbitu’s family claimed she had been planning on breaking off their long relationship.

“We are overjoyed by the news of the capture of Maggie’s murder suspect. The long hand of the law is finally catching up with Maggie’s murder suspect,” Mbitu’s family told Boston 25 News in a statement.

“We are confident that the truth will prevail and that justice for Maggie will be achieved.”

A tipoff led federal and Kenyan authorities to the alleged killer Monday at a nightclub in Nairobi, the capital of the East African country.

Massachusetts State Police had been closely following Kangethe for weeks, according to spokesperson David Procopio, who described the arrest as “a joint effort that reached across oceans and continents.”

“We had been keeping tabs on him while the international coordination of the arrest warrant and apprehension plan was being completed,” Procopio said. “The next step is the extradition process, but there is no timetable on that yet.”

Kangethe is expected to have a hearing in Kenya before being brought to Massachusetts on a murder charge.
