Donald Glover made ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ reboot ‘sexy’ without ‘any real pointers’ from Brad Pitt
Mr. and Mrs. Smith are ready to roll — but just like his original character, Brad Pitt is keeping some secrets.
The 60-year-old starred in the original 2005 “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” film with then-flame Angelina Jolie.
The spy-romance is now coming to the small screen in a new TV adaptation for Prime Video starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine.
The “Atlanta” star, 40, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday evening with Erskine, 36, and he divulged that Pitt didn’t really give him advice about the character.
“He didn’t give me any real pointers,” Glover admitted.
The “Community” alum went on: “He kind of Brad Pitt-ed his way out of it. He just kind of like charmed his way. He was like, ‘Yeah, you know, you’ll do great.'”
Glover added that he never saw the original film, which involved a married couple (Jolie and Pitt) who moonlight as agents assigned to kill each other.
“I hadn’t at the time,” he said. “I’ve seen it, obviously, by now. It’d be scary if I hadn’t. It’d be like, ‘Oh, that’s what this is about? Spies?'”
Prime’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” iteration was first announced in February 2021 with Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge taking on the title roles.
However, the “Fleabag” star, 38, dropped out in September of that year. Sources told the Hollywood Reporter at the time that she departed due to creative differences with Glover.
“I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it — still care about it,” Waller-Bridge told the outlet last year.
She continued: “And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision. Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work out.”
The “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” actress then noted that she “really cared” about the series.
Glover plays the eponymous John Smith while Erskine portrays his partner Jane Smith.
The “This is America” singer revealed on Wednesday that he made his character sexy by tapping into the love he has with his own girlfriend, Michelle White.
“I think there’s a lot of little things where I took them from my own life,” he told People. “I felt like what made this show sexy is intimacy so I wanted to do that.”
As millennial fans remember, Pitt and Jolie, 48, met and fell in love on the “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” set while the “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” star was still married to Jennifer Aniston.
“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” premieres on Feb. 2, and co-stars Sarah Paulson, Alexander Skarsgård and Parker Posey.
