I turned a Home Depot shed into a fully functioning home after living in a van for 3 years
This shack got a serious glow-up.
Instagram creator Sophie Hilaire’s home tour of her recently completed home conversion project has gone viral, with commenters in awe of the final look and the space’s roominess. But it’s not just any home. It’s a shed that received a master’s touch.
“This project took me about 18 months to complete, with many helping hands, and many competing priorities going on in parallel,” Hilaire captioned the tour of her new 640-square-foot Home Depot shed-turned-house, which has accrued more than 90,000 likes in the six days since she posted it. “I dove headfirst into this after living in my van for 3 years. I wanted to empower myself through learning about construction, and to finally put down roots after being a lifelong, transient nomad.”
The space, though open layout, is well designed to feel as though there are separate rooms within it — the first beyond the front door being an office on one side, and a dining room on the other.
The living room is in the center of the shed, and immediately adjacent to it is the kitchen, which is complete with a full-size refrigerator, cabinets made of the same material as the walls and a retro stove from the 1940s.
Off the kitchen is the single bathroom, which has a purportedly 100-year-old clawfoot tub, a pre-composting toilet, a sink — and even a washer/dryer.
Above it is a guest bedroom, with a skylight and a built-in closet directly across from Hilaire’s bedroom, which is nearly identical.
Hilaire — who has never owned a home before — shares the space with her chicken, Tootsie Pop, and says that beyond being a “cute little nest,” the space has become her “sanctuary, my safe haven and my homestead.”
Commenters were also fans.
“This is literally larger than my apartment,” the most-liked comment remarks.
“This seems bigger than 640 sf but maybe that’s just me. Love it though, would totally live there,” noted another.
