Accused bandit who robbed migrants near border fatally shot by elite Border Patrol unit: report

An accused bandit was shot and killed by US Border Patrol’s elite tactical unit in a remote area near the southern border after he allegedly stole from other migrants early Sunday morning, according to a report.

The suspect was fatally shot by a member of the highly-regarded Border Patrol Tactical Unit between Mexico and California, multiple sources told Fox News Digital.

The shooting happened after agents reached a section of the border near San Diego where there were reports of a small group of bandits robbing migrants who were trying to reach the United States to surrender and be processed, the outlet reported.

The one accused migrant bandit was shot while others fled back to Mexico. No agents were injured during the incident, Fox News reported.

More information was not immediately revealed. An email sent by a Post reporter early Monday morning was not immediately returned by US Customs and Border Protection.

Days before Sunday’s shooting, Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens blasted out surveillance images of armed bandits robbing several groups as they attempted to get into the country illegally.

There were no Border Patrol agents harmed during the encounter.

“Yet another example of the dangers these criminals & smugglers pose to the public, the migrants, and our agents,” he wrote in a post on X about the photos captured on Feb. 25.

He said at the end of last month Border Patrol had made more than 890,000 arrests with another 120,000 known “gotaways” at the border.

“The unknown is what is most concerning. Who? What? Why? That’s why we need USBP agents in the field with more resources,” he wrote.
