Seahawks cut Jamal Adams four years after disastrous trade with Jets

Jamal Adams will be looking for a new home this NFL offseason.

Four years after making a blockbuster trade with the Jets to land Adams, the Seahawks have released the safety, according to multiple reports.

The move is particularly costly for Seattle, as it comes with a $20.8 million dead cap hit.

The Seahawks sent two first-round picks, a third-round pick and safety Bradley McDougald to the Jets in exchange for Adams and a fourth-round pick in the summer of 2020.

At the time, Adams said he cried “tears of joy” and that his plan was to retire a Seahawk.

“I prayed on it hard and I asked God to place me where I needed to be, whether that was to go back to New York or whether that’s to be traded,” Adams said. “This is my calling. I’m here to stay and I’m excited to be a Seattle Seahawk.”

Adams struggled with injuries in Seattle, tearing his left quad tendon during the season opener in 2022 and missing the remainder of the year.

This past season, he missed eight games, and then-Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll acknowledged that the previous year’s knee injury was still affecting Adams.

Adams was also fined $50,000 by the NFL for berating a concussion specialist during a game in October.

After this past season, the Seahawks relegated Carroll from head coach to a role in the front office, and replaced him with Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.

In addition to Adams, the Seahawks also cut safety Quandre Diggs on Tuesday.

The Jets used the 2021 Seahawks pick as part of a package to trade up with the Vikings to select offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker, and got star wideout Garrett Wilson with Seattle’s 2022 first-round pick.

Adams was taken No. 6 overall by the Jets in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he was a Pro Bowler in 2018 and ’19 before the trade.
