Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani were reunited Tuesday for the first time as ex-teammates.
The two embraced and chatted briefly after Ohtani approached Trout in the outfield before the Dodgers faced the Angels in a Cactus League game at Camelback Ranch-Glendale in Phoenix.
The pair of superstars played together for six years in Anaheim before Ohtani signed his 10-year, $700 million free agent deal with the Dodgers this past offseason.
Despite having two of the best players in the world on the same roster, the Angels never made it to the postseason with Ohtani and Trout.
Ohtani is hoping for more success on the other side of Los Angeles, where the Dodgers are all-in once again, having brought in not just the two-way Ohtani — although he’ll be limited to DH duties this season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery — but also Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
They even traded for Tyler Glasnow and gave the former Tampa Bay Rays’ standout a huge extension.
Trout, meanwhile, remains with the Angels, who lost out on Ohtani and don’t have much hope in the AL West.
He’s in the middle of a 12-year, $426 million contract.
In Tuesday’s Cactus League game, a 4-0 win by the Angels, Trout played in center for the Angels, while Ohtani served as the DH for the Dodgers.
It didn’t quite have the drama of the last time the two met on opposing teams.
That occurred a year ago during the World Baseball Classic a year ago, when Ohtani struck out Trout to end the tournament and clinch it for Team Japan over Team USA.
