What the Mets see in their deep minors prospects to provide hope for the future

PORT ST. LUCIE — On Thursday, the Mets announced their roster for next week’s Spring Breakout game, in which some of their best prospects will play in what amounts to a showcase. Their three universally best-regarded minor leaguers — Jett Williams, Luisangel Acuña and Drew Gilbert — will rightfully earn the glow of the spotlight.

The best farm systems, though, tend to be judged as much for their quantity as for their quality. The Mets have a recent history of a top-loaded group of prospects, with a few stars and little else.

“The narrative has been, ‘Oh, we don’t have the depth in the system,’” said Andrew Christie, the Mets’ director of player development and the son of former New Jersey governor Chris. “I think that narrative is going to turn pretty significantly, especially with David [Stearns] in charge.”

Sports+ asked Christie about prospects the Mets love but the world might not know about yet. He spoke for about 28 minutes and said he gladly would have kept going for hours.
