Jacoby Brissett’s reunion with Patriots makes for intriguing quarterback situation

The Patriots have one important piece of their quarterback puzzle for next season – with likely another on the way.

New England agreed to a reunion with Jacoby Brissett on a one-year, $8 million contract during the first day of NFL free agency on Monday, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

The deal could be worth up to $12 million with incentives.

The 31-year-old veteran, who played last season as the Commanders’ backup quarterback, could fill several roles for New England, for which he played one Super Bowl-winning season as Tom Brady’s backup after the franchise selected him in the third round in 2016.

With the Patriots expected to take their quarterback of the future second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Brissett could serve as a veteran backup and competition for whomever New England selects.

Brissett could step in and be the Patriots starter early in the season if said rookie is not ready to begin the years as QB1.

He hasn’t been a full-time starter since his four seasons with the Colts from 2017-2020 when he went 11-19.

The Patriots are entering a new era after future Hall of Fame coach Belichick and the organization parted ways after 24 seasons.

The team also traded its previous starting quarterback, Mac Jones, to the Jaguars last week, giving new coach Jerod Mayo a fresh start with a familiar face in Brissett now around to help.
