Wil Lutz returns to Broncos after agreeing to Jaguars deal in bizarre about-face

Wil Lutz is staying in Denver after all.

The kicker will remain with the Broncos after agreeing to terms earlier in the day with the Jaguars.

However, Lutz apparently changed his mind and instead opted to remain with the Broncos, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

Lutz’s new contract with the Broncos is for two years, the kicker’s agent, John Perla, told the Denver Gazette, though he would not reveal how much the contract is worth.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport had reported earlier in the day that Lutz had agreed to terms on a three-year deal.

“Lutz is still going to be a Bronco,” Perla told The Denver Gazette. “There was an original arrangement (with Jacksonville) and Wil just felt a certain loyalty to Denver and felt he would be more productive in a better spot in Denver. … There was an agreement originally with Jacksonville and then it was redone with the Broncos. We didn’t have anything in writing. He just thought about it and decided that Jacksonville was not the right spot for him.”

Lutz had made 30 of 34 field goal attempts for the Broncos last season and has spent seven years in the NFL, making a Pro Bowl appearance in 2019.

The 29-year-old was traded to the Broncos by the Saints prior to the 2023 season and over the course of his seven years in the NFL, Lutz has made 195 of 229 attempted field goals.

Lutz has had an 85.2% success rate on field goals and converted 97.2% of his extra point attempts over the course of his NFL career.

The deal will not be official until the new league year begins on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Lutz’s decision to return to Denver will send Jacksonville back to the drawing board in order to find a new kicker for 2024.
