Fia James, 27, revealed a dating hack shared by her mother “that weirdly, oddly, stupidly worked,” in a now-viral video on TikTok.
“When you invite a guy over, you should be baking cookies before they get there so that your apartment still smells of cookies,” she said.
James shared that the first time her boyfriend at the time came over he was sniffing around and complimented how good her apartment smelt, but she just played it off acting as if her apartment always had the delicious aroma floating in the air.
“We tricked them and we manipulated them, and now every time they smell a cookie, they think of us,” she explained.
“Bake your cookies.”
The video amassed 11.8 million views as people thanked James for the tip.
Others noted that the hack was used in the movies “Clueless” and “Because I Said So.”
For those without the proper tools or skills, some noted that a cookie-scented candle could also do the trick.
The hack mimics the Pavlov effect or “classical conditioning,” which states that behaviors can be learned through repetition with a neutral cue.
The theory was officially developed when physiologist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov showed that dogs could be conditioned to salivate at the sound of a bell if that sound was repeatedly presented at the same time that they were given food.
