Patriots have worst preseason betting outlook in more than 30 years

It’s been a long time since the New England Patriots have had this bad of a preseason outlook.

The Patriots are currently +17000 to win the 2025 Super Bowl, which are the second-worst odds at FanDuel Sportsbook ahead of only the Carolina Panthers (+30000).

If that number holds, those would be the second-worst preseason Super Bowl odds for New England since at least 1977, beating out only the 1991 season when the Pats were +50000 to win the Lombardi Trophy, according to Sports Odds History, via Ben Fawkes.

They are also, by far, the biggest long shot to win the AFC East, trailing the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, who are all +280 or better at FanDuel, and the AFC at-large (+9000).

The franchise, of course, is coming off perhaps the most successful run in NFL history before a recent downturn.

The Patriots had 19 straight winning seasons, including six Super Bowl victories, from 2001 to 2019 with quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick at the helm.

Brady has been out of New England for four years now, and Belichick departed in January after finishing below .500 in three out of the last four seasons.

The Patriots dropped to 4-13 last season – their worst record since 1992 – and have since hired Jerod Mayo to run the team.

Betting on the NFL?

It’s going to take a lot of work to get anywhere near the success of the Brady-Belichick era, but there’s still plenty of time left this offseason for the Patriots to improve their 2024 prospects.

New England holds the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and is rumored to be in the market for a quarterback after trading starting QB Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is currently the favorite (+105, FanDuel) to be drafted at No. 3, though the Patriots could potentially trade out of the draft slot.
