Jets open cap space with C.J. Mosley contract extension

The Jets cleared some cap space while also extending one of their best players.

Linebacker C.J. Mosley received a two-year, $17.25 million contract that features $13.25 million guaranteed, including $9 million guaranteed this season, The Post’s Brian Costello confirmed.

This deal is a win-win for both sides as Mosley receives an extra year and guaranteed money when he did not have any guarantees remaining, and the Jets lower his cap hit for 2024.

Mosley’s cap hit had been set for $21.5 million, and the Jets cleared at least $8 million.

The Jets, despite several moves, still have some holes to fill and every penny counts.

They have a glaring need for a second receiver, and there are some veterans available, such as Mike Williams, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, Odell Beckham Jr. and Tyler Boyd.

Williams, the ex-Charger, would be an intriguing option alongside Garrett Wilson, but he has battled injuries during his career.

The Jets have been linked to Boyd, a steady veteran with the Bengals, but they reportedly are battling the Steelers and two-time defending champion Super Bowl champion Chiefs, per The Athletic.

Tee Higgins reportedly has also requested a trade, although he surely wants a mega contract.

As the Jets look to bolster their offense, having Mosley for the next two years should help them continue to have a top-tier defense.

Mosley, 31, is the team’s defensive captain and has at least 150 combined tackles over the past three seasons, including 152 this past season.

He has tallied 487 combined tackles and 3.5 sacks in his four seasons with the Jets, earning second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 202.

The Jets’ defense will have a bit of a new look next season with Bryce Huff leaving for the Eagles, while they have added defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, cornerback Isaiah Oliver and defensive tackle Leki Fotu.
