‘He just shot at the car!’: Shocking video shows Chicago Uber driver escaping gunfire during routine fare
Shocking dashcam footage showed an Uber being hit with a hail of gunfire in Chicago just moments after the driver pulled away for a routine ride with a female passenger.
Driver John Williams picked up a young woman in West Garfield Park — dubbed the Windy City’s most violent neighborhood by the Chicago Sun-Times — on Sunday night, the video shows.
His passenger appeared calm as she got into the backseat — before suddenly saying, “Go, go, go! He’s going to shoot at the car.”
“Shoot up the car?” Williams asked, as he pulled away.
“Yeah! Go!” she replied, as the driver accelerated only to hear two gunshots seconds later.
“What is that? What the f–k was that?” Williams asked.
“He just shot at the car,” said the passenger, before saying she would call the cops.
“But why? Man … f–k this s–t!” the driver exclaimed.
The woman contacted police while they waited nearby — but “the situation escalated as more gunshots rang out, and cars began making erratic maneuvers on the street,” Williams told Storyful.
“Feeling increasingly uneasy and fearing for our safety, I made the difficult decision to inform [the passenger] that I couldn’t wait for the police any longer,” he said.
The driver then took the woman to her destination before continuing with his shift.
Chicago Police had no report of the shooting, the outlet reported Thursday.
Authorities could not immediately be contacted by The Post.
The crime-stricken neighborhood of about 17,000 residents, several miles west of Chicago’s Loop business district, had seen a shooting about every other day between 2018 and 2023 as gangs plagued the area, according to the newspaper’s report from last year.
An 88-year-old longtime West Garfield Park resident recounted that on recent separate occasions, bullets had twice shattered her car window, one went through her window and got lodged in her stove, and she was struck by shards of concrete that went flying when a bullet hit the sidewalk
“I used to call the police all the time,” Helen King said. “But now, I don’t bother. … This used to be a wonderful neighborhood with block clubs and parties for the children.”
But now “my grandchildren only stay in the back of the house,” she reportedly said
