Convicted killer who served over two decades in prison busted in NYC subway stabbing after getting off parole: cops
A convicted killer who served more than two decades behind bars was arrested again this week for allegedly stabbing a man inside a Brooklyn subway station, authorities said.
Kevin Stembridge, 52 – who spent more than 25 years behind bars for a 1990 Queens murder — allegedly knifed another 52-year-old man multiple times in the back inside the Kosciuszko Street J train station around 4:30 a.m. Monday, according to cops and court records.
The victim – who had gotten into a feud with Stembridge about smoking on the train – was taken to the Kings County Hospital Center, where he was listed in stable condition.
It was unclear who exactly had been smoking, prompting the outburst of violence.
Stembridge, of East New York, tried to take off after the attack but was arrested on the street outside the transit system, police said.
He was arraigned Tuesday on charges of assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the criminal complaint against him.
Prosecutors requested that he be held on $75,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond, but a Brooklyn Criminal Court judge set bail at $7,500 cash or $35,000 bond, the District Attorney’s Office said.
Stembridge was sentenced to a maximum of life behind bars in connection to the Queens murder in 1992, according to the Queens DA’s Office.
Specific details on the 34-year-old case were unknown Tuesday afternoon, as a criminal complaint was not immediately available.
Stembridge’s prison sentence began in December 1992, and he was released on parole in June 2018, according to state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision records.
His parole expired July 2021, the records show.
