Dog digs up piece of antique bomb in Florida backyard

This dog is dynamite.

A Florida man got the shock of his life last week when the family pooch went from a dog with a bone to a dog with a bomb after finding a piece of unexploded ordnance in the backyard.

Local police said Mathew Sims was playing with his pup — named Baby — in his backyard on 15th Street in Jacksonville on Wednesday when the curious pooch started digging near the fence line, according to FOX 30.

Sims walked over to make sure she wasn’t picking up anything she wasn’t supposed to — and that’s when he spotted something sticking up out of the ground.

“You couldn’t tell what it was until you started pulling it up,” Sims told the network. “Once I got it halfway out, I was like oh, ‘I know what this is, let me gently put this back down.’”

Baby had uncovered a small piece of military ordnance that was about a foot long and weighed around 10 pounds, the homeowner said.

It appeared to have been buried for some time, based on the decaying object’s rusting metal, according to a police report.

“OK, is this live?” Sims said to himself upon discovering the small, bomb-like piece under about six inches of dirt. “You panic, then you drop.”

Cops evacuated the residents as a bomb squad came to remove the antique explosive.

Despite the chaos, neighbor Carla Smith told the network that she wasn’t worried.

“We just watched,” she said. “I wasn’t scared because I’ve been around people who have found artifacts in the land.”

“To me, it was interesting to watch,” she continued. “They did their thing, and they were out of here in minutes.”

It’s still a mystery how the ordnance ended up in the yard of a suburban home. But Sims said he’s just happy they were able to find it so it could be disposed of.
