Bill Belichick roasted by his son Steve: ‘I’ve got a job and he doesn’t’

Bill Belichick’s son found the legendary coach’s job status to be a laughing matter.

Steve Belichick, who previously worked under his father on the Patriots’ coaching staff, was introduced as defensive coordinator at the University of Washington on Wednesday.

Asked about the differences between himself and his father, Steve answered, “We definitely have similarities. I’ve got a job and he doesn’t.”

The reporters in the room laughed, and Steve added, “He knows that.”

“I look up to my dad. He mentored me. But I’m myself,” he added. “I’m excited to get out on the field and work with these guys and work with the kids and recruit the kids and just kind of be myself.”

The 37-year-old Steve Belichick was a defensive assistant on New England’s staff from 2012 through this past season, at different times coaching safeties, defensive backs and outside linebackers.

He was hired onto the staff at Washington under new head coach Jedd Fisch.

Fisch joined the Huskies after coaching at the University of Arizona the past three seasons.

The two overlapped on the Patriots’ staff in 2020 when Fisch served as quarterbacks coach.

Bill Belichick and the Patriots parted ways in January after Belichick spent 24 years as head coach and won six Super Bowl championships.

“I’ll always be a Patriot,” the elder Belichick said at his exit press conference. “I look forward to coming back here, but at this time we are going to move on. I look forward and am excited for the future, but always very, very appreciative of the opportunity, the support here, and, Robert [Kraft], what you’ve done for me.”

This offseason, Belichick interviewed for the Falcons head coaching job, which ultimately went to Raheem Morris.

He is being courted by various broadcasting entities to work in some capacity next season.
