Wild UNLV campus shooter video released showing cops scrambling to contain carnage
Just-released video of a bloody shootout at the University of Las Vegas that left three people dead and another seriously hurt shows cops scrambling to take out the shooter before he could kill anyone else.
Campus police can be seen jumping behind patrol cars to avoid gunfire — then fatally shooting gunman Anthony Polito outside a university building, according to 20 hours of footage from the scene.
Polito, 67, a former business professor from North Carolina, unleashed his 10-minute reign of terror because his applications to teach at UNLV had been turned down, authorities said.
Footage, collected from law enforcement bodycams and campus surveillance cameras, showed one campus cop who arrived at the business school building 78 seconds after the shooting started, as people began to flee from the nearby Student Union.
“It is difficult to listen to these recordings and watch the videos and not reflect on the tragic events that day,” university Vice President of Public Safety Adam Garcia said.
An hour of 911 recordings included the sound of two early gunshots, as well as a father who told first responders he had texted him to say she was hiding in a classroom.
Polito is seen getting out of a black sedan wearing a black trench coat and pulling something out of the glove compartment before calmly striding toward the business school building.
Another video shows a wounded professor collapsing on the sidewalk not far from a police car.
UNLV President Keith Whitfield has said the man, a visiting professor, was “improving daily … doing rehab and out of the hospital.” He has not been identified by name.
Police said three UNLV educators — Naoko Takemaru, 69; Cha Jan “Jerry” Chang, 64; and Patricia Navarro Velez, 39 — were killed during the shooting rampage.
