Giants bring back Isaiah Simmons to address big defensive need

It turns out that the Giants’ trade for Isaiah Simmons was more than just a one-year rental.

The Giants on Friday agreed to terms on a new one-year contract with Simmons nearly four weeks into free agency, making their first move to address inside linebacker this offseason.

Carter Coughlin previously re-signed, but the core special-teamer only has played eight defensive snaps over the last two seasons combined.

Simmons, 25, still is awaiting the kind of breakout season befitting his selection as the No. 8 overall pick in the 2020 draft by the Cardinals.

He originally was acquired by the Giants late last August in a trade for a seventh-round pick (No. 226 overall) in the upcoming draft.

Simmons recorded 50 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery in 17 games (four starts last season).

His interception return for a touchdown to seal a Week 11 victory against Washington was his most impressive moment.

One of Simmons’ best traits is his schematic versatility.

He lined up for 166 defensive snaps in the box, 137 on the defensive line and 65 at slot cornerback, according to Pro Football Focus, while also contributing on special teams.

It will be interesting to see how Simmons will be deployed under new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, given that he was acquired largely because he was a favorite of former defensive Wink Martindale.

Over three seasons as defensive coordinator for the Titans, Bowen’s defenses were best at stopping the run, which does not align with the athletic Simmons’ strengths.

Described as a “good addition” by general manager Joe Schoen after last season, Simmons is the Giants’ fifth in-house free-agent to re-sign.
