Vladimir Guerrero Jr. celebrated a home run against the Yankees on Saturday, and Yankees fans were not happy about it.
After every one of Guerrero’s home runs, he shushes the crowd while rounding third base, he said.
And even though his home run brought the Blue Jays within six runs in the seventh inning, Guerrero didn’t change up his celebration.
“It’s something that I do everywhere regardless of the situation,” Guerrero said through an interpreter after the Blue Jays’ 9-8 loss, which was followed by another Yankees win Sunday during the teams’ three-game series.
Guerrero took his time getting to third before making the motion.
Yankee fans responded with a chorus of boos for the Blue Jays slugger, whose 362-foot home run off Luke Weaver made the score 9-3.
“That’s kind of his M.O. around third all the time,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters Saturday. “I’ve said it before: They don’t boo nobodies here in New York.”
The home run was Guerrero’s second of the year, and even though he’s hitting only .182 and his two RBIs have come off both of his home runs, he said he’s starting to feel more like himself.
“Better-quality at-bats, definitely, especially the last three at-bats,” Guerrero told reporters.
While the Blue Jays were still trailing by a lot after the home run, Guerrero’s shot started a Toronto rally that almost ended up stealing the game from the Yankees.
Toronto added two more runs in the seventh, off a Daniel Vogelbach double and Ernie Clement sacrifice fly.
Heading into the ninth, the Yankees had a 9-5 lead, but the Jays cut into that, scoring three runs.
They had the game-tying run at first base, but Clay Holmes struck out George Springer on three pitches to secure the win for the Yankees.
Guerrero went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the Blue Jays’ 8-3 loss to the Yankees on Sunday.
