NY’s sanctuary city backfire: Letters to the Editor — April 13, 2024

The Issue: New York’s controversial “sanctuary city” laws amid its ongoing immigration crisis.

Michael Goodwin’s description of the millions of migrants journeying into our country is a far cry from my family’s journey 75 years ago (“Asylum policy is just that: insane,” April 10).

Back then there were no free debit cards, and barely any smiles from the admitting personnel. None of that mattered, because my family had arrived in America: the great country where we could be free and live life.

We learned the language, we loved our schools and my parents worked very hard to achieve the American dream of owning a home and educating their children. We respected authority and always voted in elections.

Fortunately, both of my parents passed away before they could see how the current immigration crisis is destroying the fabric of our country.

Another day, another example of failed Democratic policies.

I wonder if our legislative geniuses ever experience remorse over their systematic failures.

Undocumented migrants are blatantly breaking the law.

Forget feeling remorse: Our leaders should be embarrassed.

The kick in the teeth is that they get paid for their ineptitude.

Michael Goodwin has aptly named the new reality show I am watching: It’s called “Crime Without Punishment.”

It features a grand city now pulled down to a crime level not witnessed in decades.

It has a vibrant mayor who feels crime does pay and a “sanctuary city” policy that allows the crazies to run the asylum.

Until New Yorkers vote to elect competent politicians into office, the lawlessness will only continue.

I guess that will make for great viewership numbers, though.

Parents used to look forward to a better life for their children in America.

Now they just hope that America will survive.

The Issue: Former President Donald Trump says abortion law should be left to states.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it best during a recent interview when she remarked that former President Donald Trump “doesn’t believe anything” in regards to Trump’s “core belief” on abortion (“Trump’s ‘abort-face,’” April 9).

And why should he, as POTUS?

Abortion is a private matter that involves delicate and painful choices that must be made by the woman who is pregnant, and her alone. Nobody else should be involved in that process.

But here we are with churches and governments dictating terms to private citizens on a very private matter.

Democrats have found Republicans’ Achilles heel. Trump — and the entire Republican establishment, for that matter — should dump the religious right. It’s not our future, but our medieval past.

It is a sinking ship, and trying to cling to it will assure that you will go down with it.

Finally, Trump’s advisers woke up and showed him the importance of making a public announcement that he is flexible on abortion.

By allowing each state to implement their own abortion policy, he may convince enough women to jump off the “Hate Trump” bandwagon.

We should let the people of every state decide their own fate in regards to abortion.

If California, New York and Washington want to spit in God’s face, then let them — and let them receive God’s wrath.
