Zach Wilson enters wild quarterback situation with Broncos after Jets trade

Zach Wilson’s turbulent Jets tenure concludes with an interesting landing spot.

The Jets sent Wilson and a seventh-round pick to the Broncos in return for a sixth-round pick on Monday.

Wilson joins a quarterback room where there is not anyone who has been a successful NFL starter.

The Broncos released Russell Wilson earlier this offseason, absorbing $85 million in dead cap to let go of the quarterback after two seasons in Denver after he and Sean Payton did not vibe together.

Jarrett Stidham is likely atop the depth chart, at least for the time being.

Stidham, 27, started the Broncos’ final two games this past season when Wilson was benched so that the team did not have to worry about a freak play triggering the injury guarantee in his contract.

He also started two games for the Raiders in 2022.

Stidham was drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Patriots and backed up Tom Brady in his rookie season, Cam Newton in his sophomore campaign and Mac Jones in his third year.

The other quarterback currently under contract with the Broncos is Ben DiNucci, who started one game with the Cowboys in 2020.

DiNucci was the Cowboy’s backup in 2020 and 2021, then played for the XFL’s Portland Sea Dragons in 2023 before signing with the Broncos last May.

Wilson was selected second overall by the Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft, and the team went 12-21 in his starts over the past three seasons.

It remains to be seen whether the Broncos will add any other quarterbacks via the draft, trades or free agency.
