Justin Fields had ‘toxic’ relationship with Nick Foles as messy Bears detail emerge

It seems Justin Fields made no new friends during his rookie season with the Bears.

Ahead of the 2021 campaign, Fields reportedly had a “toxic as hell” relationship with the other two quarterbacks on the team, namely Nick Foles, according to Tyler Dunne of “Go Long.”

The crux of the issue seems to be that Fields — whom the Bears traded up with the Giants to draft — couldn’t take much constructive criticism from Foles, who attempted to advise the young quarterback only to find out that Fields was not paying attention to the Super Bowl MVP-winning quarterback.

An anonymous source told Go Long the two “could not stand each other” as a result of Fields’ lack of respect during the teachable moment for the rookie.

This is not the first time we’ve heard of trouble during Fields’ time in Chicago since being traded to Pittsburgh.

In particular, the Bears’ ex-Director of Player Personnel told “Windy City Gridiron” in February that Fields was by far the best quarterback in 2021 but refused to take advice from Foles and the other quarterback on the roster, Andy Dalton.

“We thought having two vets with him would really help him with Andy and Nick and that was not cohesive at all,” Lucas said.

“There’s teachable moments every snap on Sunday. When you’ve got two guys that have won as much as Nick and seen as much as Andy, and you don’t take that information in, because you’re a little standoffish and a little abrasive, you’re wasting that opportunity.”

Fields was traded by the Bears after a controversial, although largely unsuccessful, three years as the team’s quarterback.

He concluded his final season in Chicago with 2,562 passing yards, 16 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. The Bears went just 16-35 during his three years in Chicago.

The team snagged quarterback Caleb Williams, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick, thanks to a previous trade from the 2023 NFL Draft with the Panthers.

The Steelers acquired Fields via trade with the Bears, and he is expected to have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback back alongside Russell Wilson.

Fields, 25, had a checkered history with Foles but will have the chance to show improved maturity when he works through the offseason and training camp with another Super Bowl winner in Wilson.

Although Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has not officially declared a starter, FanDuel Sportsbook projected that Wilson has an 88.24 percent chance to start as Fields heads into his contract year.
