Yankees’ Clarke Schmidt vows to quickly fix pitch-tipping issue: ‘Could easily see it’

Less than a day after Clarke Schmidt and the Yankees said they discovered the indicator that allowed Seattle’s Josh Rojas to relay a pitch to Dylan Moore in the top of the third Tuesday, Schmidt and pitching coach Matt Blake said the issue had been addressed.

“It’ll be fixed by my next start,’’ Schmidt said prior to Wednesday’s 7-3 win over the Mariners in The Bronx.

Schmidt took the unusual step of acknowledging he’d tipped a pitch following Tuesday’s game, after Moore drilled a 93 mph 3-2 cutter into the left-field seats.

“You could easily see it,’’ Schmidt said. “Half the reason I brought it up was that it was so obvious, any team would be aware of it.”

Rojas agreed, saying, “You can see in the video he was clearly tipping.”

Schmidt and Blake said the right-hander would continue to work on it between starts.

“This thing seems to come up a handful of times every year,” said Aaron Boone, who saw Luis Severino deal with it as a Yankee in the past. “Obviously, it’s something that goes on in baseball and we’re constantly vigilant [about it].”

Tommy Kahnle returned from the 15-day IL, where he’d spent the season until being activated Wednesday.

The right-hander showed no ill effects from the shoulder inflammation that sidelined him since spring training, as Kahnle retired all three batters he faced in a scoreless sixth.

Ian Hamilton (7-day COVID-IL) is expected back in the bullpen at some point this weekend, Boone said.

Scott Effross’ rehab from October 2022 Tommy John surgery and a December back procedure, is likely just weeks from a rehab assignment.

Acquired from the Cubs at the trade deadline in 2022, Effross pitched in just 13 games for the Yankees before getting injured.

Gerrit Cole (elbow) is set to throw off a mound this weekend, according to Boone.

Luke Weaver gave up a three-run homer to Luke Raley to snap an 18-inning scoreless streak.

Luis Gil will make his 10th start of the season on Thursday and has quickly emerged as one of the Yankees’ top starters.

The right-hander will turn 26 next week and impressed Blake with his maturity on the mound.

“Maybe I didn’t expect him to be this good, this quick,’’ Blake said. “He’s great at making subtle adjustments.”

Gil, who arrived from the Twins in 2018 in a trade for outfielder Jake Cave, has allowed the fewest hits per nine innings of anyone in the rotation (4.8) and is tops in strikeouts (11.4).

DJ LeMahieu reported no issues Wednesday after playing another rehab game on Tuesday with High-A Hudson Valley. He worked out Wednesday, but didn’t play in a game.

Boone said LeMahieu — out all season so far with a non-displaced foot fracture — will likely play another rehab game with Hudson Valley Thursday before moving up to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre over the weekend and is on schedule to join the team and be activated by the time the Yankees visit Anaheim on Tuesday.
