‘The Show’ Episode 103: Darryl Strawberry Talks Mets Number Retirement

It’s been a long time coming.

On Saturday at Citi Field, Darryl Strawberry will finally have his No. 18 go into the rafters.

He will join old teammate Dwight Gooden, who had his No. 16 retired in April.

Though Strawberry won two championships with the Yankees, his title in 1986 with the Mets, the team he started his iconic career with, is who his heart truly lies with.

His first eight years with the Mets is where it all began and where he put up his greatest numbers.

Strawberry joined Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman this week on “The Show” podcast. The three-time World Series champion spoke about how special Saturday will be for him, his Mets and Yankees memories and the ups and downs in his life on and off the field.

“The Show” podcast with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman:

  • YANKEES SUCCESS: Yankees doing incredible financially. They can afford Juan Soto.
  • METS STRUGGLES: Hard pathway for them to get back to .500 and in the race.

Darryl Strawberry Interview
Mets Hall of Famer, 3-time World Series champion

  • NUMBER RETIREMENT: Excited for number to be retired. Happy for the organization. This is his home. This is where it all started. Fans were always great to me.
  • REGRETS: Broken relationship with the front office. The Mets offered a two-year deal and it felt like a slap in the face. Was sad they couldn’t come to an agreement.
  • 1986 METS: Team you didn’t want to mess with. Guys that loved playing with each other. Managers and coaches were awesome. They were crazy. Looking back to some of the fights they had and fun moments that went down.
  • YANKEES MEMORIES: Looking back at memories from winning two championships with the Yankees. Love those guys. They are family to me.
  • 1986 METS VS 1998 YANKEES: Who wins? Mets would have won the fight. Both had great rotations.
  • UPS AND DOWNS: His wife was the key to getting his life in order and turning it around. She has brought the balance that he needs.
