Here are the surprising jobs New Yorkers really want — with the top pick earning just $64K on average

Flight attendant takes the top spot as the most wanted job in New York, according to a new survey of job seeking habits.

Empire State residents appear to eager to get up from behind a desk — and move about the cabin — with an average of 16,815 of us researching the career shift each month, according to an analysis of Google Search.

The experts at online education aggregator Class Central — which helps match prospective learners with the right programs — pored over the search data for 100 popular careers, from accountant to zoologist, building a list of New York’s most wanted jobs.

After flight attendant, things take a considerable turn, with phlebotomist — a person who draws blood — and nurse ranking second and third.

Nationally, things looked a little different, with phlebotomist, flight attendant and welder ranking as the top three most wanted careers in the United States in 2023.

“It is fascinating to see such a diverse array of jobs in the ranking, reflecting the different skills, passions and ambitions of people in the state,” said founder of Class Central Dhawal Shah.

“This research highlights the boundless possibilities that exist in the professional landscape, and it will hopefully inspire people to pursue the best career for them,” Shah said.

Here, a closer look at the five most searched jobs in New York, supplied to The Post by Class Central researchers.

Flight Attendant

“Terms related to a flight attendant career have an average monthly search volume of 16,815 . With an average salary of around $64,000 in the US, this job involves ensuring the safety, security and comfort of passengers on an aeroplane. It is possible to become a flight attendant with just a high school diploma, however, some airlines may have additional requirements, such as a college degree or fluency in another language for international flights.”

Phlebotomist

“The phlebotomy profession has an average monthly search volume of 14,387 in the state. People in this job role are responsible for drawing blood from patients or donors, earning just under $40,000 per year on average. Becoming a phlebotomist requires gaining a high school diploma, followed by a qualification from an accredited phlebotomy program, and then a national certification.”

Nurse

“There are 12,539 average monthly Google searches for terms related to a career in nursing. Anybody wanting to become a nurse in the US must gain a nursing degree, pass the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses, and obtain a state licence. The average salary for this profession in the US is over $80,000.”

Data Analyst

“The data analyst job role is next, with an average monthly search volume of 9,353. The average salary in this profession varies, but is usually around $60,000. They specialize in collecting, processing, and performing statistical analyses on large datasets.”

Pharmacist

“There are 8,646 average monthly Google searches for terms related to a career as a pharmacist. Their responsibilities include dispensing medications to patients, conducting health screenings, administering immunizations, and providing guidance on the safe use of medicines. People wanting to become a pharmacist must complete a PharmD degree program and pass a licensure exam. The average salary for people in this job role is around $120,000.”

Google Keyword Planner searches between 4/23-3/24 were used to find the top five jobs with the highest average monthly search volume per 100,000 New Yorkers.
