Katie Holmes ‘wasn’t aware’ there is a ‘Dawson’s Creek’ group chat: I’m ‘busy’

There’s always one friend that never checks the group chat.

And in the case of the “Dawson’s Creek” cast, it’s Katie Holmes.

The actress, who played Joey Potter on the teen drama series, revealed that she didn’t know about the WhatsApp group chat that her former co-star Joshua Jackson spoke about last year.

“All of us text every now and then, but I wasn’t aware of the WhatsApp,” Holmes, 45, told the Times on Saturday.

“But you know what? I’m really bad at WhatsApp. I never check it because it’s a little too much,” she added.

Despite not being active in the group chat, Holmes did confirm that she keeps in touch with her former cast members.

Katie Holmes starred in “Dawson’s Creek,” which ran from 1998 to 2003 on the WB.

“I mean, every now and then. Everyone’s grown up and is busy, but the bond will forever be there,” she said.

Jackson, who played Pacey Witter on “Dawson’s Creek,” told the Times about the WhatsApp group in April 2023.

“It doesn’t get a lot of use, but every once in a while someone will crop up,” he said. “[In January] we passed the 25th anniversary [of the show] so there was a flurry of texts. It really centers around, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe that we all went through that thing together.’ It’s obviously such a formative point in all our lives.”

The 45-year-old actor also talked about why he thinks the series was so successful.

“I think the secret to the show was that it didn’t talk to young people like they’re stupid,” said Jackson. “Those characters and what they were going through felt real. We were trying to tell stories about those moments in your life, and we were close enough to it in our own ages that we deeply remembered what that angst was.”

“Dawson’s Creek” aired on the now-defunct The WB from 1998 to 2003, following the high school and college dramas of friends in fictional Capeside, Massachusetts, including Dawson (James Van Der Beek), Pacey, Joey and Jen (Michelle Williams).

Holmes and Jackson famously dated when they starred on the show. She’s now mom to 18-year-old daughter Suri, whom she had with ex-husband Tom Cruise. Jackson, meanwhile, shares 4-year-old daughter Juno, with ex-wife Jodie Turner-Smith.

Holmes talked about the special bond between the cast when she appeared on Kelly Ripa’s talk show, “Live With Kelly & Mark,” last year.

“It’s amazing to start in this industry so young and to maintain those friendships,” she said. “To know people who carry your memories, and you to carry theirs, is something so special. It’s delightful.”

In 2018, the “Dawson’s Creek” cast reunited to appear on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.

“I think we’ve all sort of seen each other over the years, but not everybody all together,” Holmes said in the interview with the outlet, adding, “And never for long enough.”

Creator Kevin Williamson said: “I run into James and Josh, Katie, Michelle, and I just get a big smile on my face. It’s just a very, very special time in my life.”
