‘Entitled’ people are ‘claiming’ baby names before they’re even expecting — and parents-to-be are pissed: ‘It’s really weird’
People are whining about the baby names they’ve supposedly claimed before they’re even expecting children — and their friends are over it.
An unnamed future dad complained about the phenomenon in a Reddit thread sharing his experience.
He claimed that his pregnant wife posted a photo on Snapchat showing off the lists of names they had each made poking fun at how different and short his list was compared to hers.
“We’ve been struggling coming up with a name we both like,” he admitted.
But the dilemma was only made worse when his wife’s friends began commenting on the photo.
He claimed that some women began messaging his wife claiming that “they’ve reserved some of these names so she can’t use them.”
“These women are not pregnant, they may never have a son, and yet they’re telling us what we can and can’t name our child,” the man complained.
“It’s easier for me to ignore, but these are her best friends so she cares what they think more than I do.”
Most people seemed agree that the friends’ behavior was ridiculous — and many revealed they had experienced similar situations.
“I would go as far to say she got dibs first by actually getting pregnant first,” someone commented.
“People feel entitled to things they don’t have on a daily basis. It’s really weird,” another said.
Several people even shared how a baby name that was supposedly claimed by a friend or family member was never even used at the end of all the drama.
“When my sister was pregnant with my eldest niece, Lily was in the lineup for names, I was upset because I wanted that name for my future daughter. She ended up choosing something else anyway, but here I am 15 years later with a boy and no plans to have anymore kids. So tell your wife to ignore those friends,” someone said.
Beyond suggesting the couple ignore all the wife’s “petty” friends, many people also suggested not talking about baby names with others until the child is born and the birth certificate is signed.
“Do not under any circumstances share the name you plan to give your baby with anyone until after they are born. Once you announce the baby and his name, people are (mostly) polite enough to keep their options to themselves and be happy for the baby,” someone advised.

Last year, Noah ended Liam’s five-year streak as the top name, according to BabyCenter, and continues to hold the top spot so far this year.
Parents not inspired by cultural trends are instead reportedly choosing baby names that sound “cool” as a TikTok or Instagram handle or even searching through cemeteries.
