Zach Wilson ‘in the mix’ to be Broncos’ starting QB after rough OTAs showing

The Broncos have three months to decide on a starting quarterback before their season-opener at Seattle, and it appears Zach Wilson is going to get the chance this summer to prove he should be under center in Week 1.

Jeremy Fowler on ESPN reported that Wilson, whom the Jets traded to Denver in April after three ugly seasons, is “in the mix” to be the Broncos’ starter, according to Bleacher Report.

“They’re trying to regain [Wilson’s] confidence again,” Fowler said. “I’m told he’s in a positive state of mind.”

The Broncos selected Bo Nix out of Oregon in the first round of this year’s NFL draft and have Jarrett Stidham as a holdover after cutting Russell Wilson.

Zach Wilson, a Utah native who is now closer to home, got a chance with the starters during 11-on-11 drills at Broncos OTAs last Tuesday and he struggled, according to the Denver Post, throwing an interception and showing inaccuracy.

Wilson is still just 24 years old, but in 33 career starts he has yet to live up to the hype of being the No. 2 overall pick in 2021 out of BYU.

After two poor seasons, the Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers from the Packers last spring and expected to contend for a Super Bowl while Wilson could learn under his idol.

But Wilson was thrust right back into action when Rodgers tore his Achilles four plays into the 2023 season.

Wilson was benched after Week 11, had one of the best games of his career when he returned as a starter in Week 14 against the Texans and then suffered a season-ending concussion in Week 15.

The Broncos acquired Wilson and a seventh-round pick for a sixth-rounder.
