Shocked family finds bear living in crawl space beneath baby’s room

He’s not exactly the kind of teddy bear you get your newborn.

A California homeowner was shocked to discover that a bear was living in his family’s crawl space beneath the room being prepped for his new baby.

The bear, who was dubbed Samson and is tagged by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, has been known to roam the neighborhood of Monrovia for years, but the bear now appears to want to settle down in Jaimey Tate’s home, ABC 7 reports.

“I feel like I’ve heard him a couple of times,” Tate told the outlet Tuesday about his new tenant.

The bear is known around the neighborhood, where residents have said he has yet to cause any real trouble. KABC

“We definitely have heard him going through the trash and then last night, he got into the trash and was dragging it under the house and you could definitely hear him in that bedroom,” he added.

While Samson can be messy, Tate said the bear hasn’t been a threat to anyone in the neighborhood as he comes and goes from beneath the house.

Tate, however, is worried about letting Samson stay just below the bedroom where his new child will be sleeping as his wife is expected to give birth soon.

“It’s a little weird… about to have a baby and knowing that there’s a bear under the bedroom where you’re going to be putting the child,” he admitted.

Because Samson has never posed a danger to residents, Tate said he was advised by wildlife and police officials to wait until the bear leaves before boarding up the crawl space to keep him from returning.

While Tate said it was for the best, it seemed like he would miss the squatter who he and his wife had grown accustomed to.

“We were talking to him last night from our bedroom window and he just sat there, munched on the food, and didn’t bother anybody,” Tate told the outlet.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
