I traveled 1,700 miles for a destination wedding — but I was a year too soon
She was destined for a vacation.
Llarissa Pye, 29, revealed her unfortunate travel mistake when flying 1,700 miles from the Canary Islands to England for her dad’s upcoming wedding.
“I was about to take off and I saw all the messages,” Pye told SWNS. “I called my dad and he said ‘Llarissa, the wedding isn’t until next year.'”
Last December, Pye, 29, received news that her father, 53, got engaged to his partner of three years, which she was ecstatic about.
However, her excitement may have gotten the best of her when he called to give her the wedding details.
“My dad must have said, ‘It’s on my birthday next year,'” which is June 2, she added. “But I heard ‘we’re sorry it’s short notice, we understand if you can’t make it.””
Pye assumed the wedding was happening soon and rushed to get her travel arrangements in place to leave on May 31.
“I had to ask a girl to change shifts last minute,” she confessed. “I’d sent my flights through but [he] hadn’t seen it said 2024.”
She booked her $255 one-way flight, found a coworker to cover her shift and was ready to witness her father and soon-to-be stepmom’s union.
“On Friday morning, I text them to say, ‘I’m at the airport; see you in a few hours’,” Pye said.
As she settled on the plane, she turned her phone into sleep mode, unaware of the surge of calls and texts she was about to receive from her dad.
Coincidentally, Pye looked at her phone and saw the notification. Then, she called her dad to find out what had happened, only to find out that she had booked her flight a year before the wedding celebration.
“We were just laughing down the phone,” Pye chuckled. “I’ve never been a year early.”
Despite arriving a year too soon to the wedding destination, which is also her hometown in Cheshire, England, she was able to try on bridesmaid dresses and catch up with her friends and family.
The 29-year-old returned to the Canary Islands on June 4.
“They are still laughing about it now,” she said. “Most people have said, ‘how did you manage that?'”
Pye found the situation hilarious, especially since she has communicated with her father throughout the process and considers herself “fairly organized.”
“I guess a year is short notice for my dad,” she laughed. “It’s all fun. I’ve got time to fix my tan lines now.”
