South Carolina cop put on leave after fatally running over 66-year-old woman on beach with police pickup truck

A South Carolina cop was put on administrative leave after driving over a 66-year-old woman on the sands at Myrtle Beach and killing her, according to police.

The woman, identified as Sandra “Sandy” Schultz-Peters, was on the beach around 1 p.m. on Thursday when she was struck by a police pickup truck — and died at a local hospital.

“I heard somebody yell, ‘There’s somebody that’s been run over,'” bystander Dennis Miller told WBTW-TV. “We run over here and, yeah, there’s a lady on the ground and there’s a truck on top of her.”

The Horry County Police Department called the incident “a tragedy” in a statement on Facebook.

“We have a responsibility to ensure the investigations — both external and internal — occur without delay or interference,” the department said.

“Horry County Police Department is providing any access and information that South Carolina Highway Patrol may require to complete their investigation,” the post said. “At this time the officer involved is on administrative leave.”

Highway patrol investigators were back at the beach on Friday and flew drones over the scene.

A similar incident happened in Horry County in 2020, when a woman lying on the beach in nearby Garden City was hit by a police car and injured, according to WBTW.
