Sparks rookie Cameron Brink carried to locker room with knee injury

Los Angeles Sparks rookie Cameron Brink was helped to the locker room after suffering an apparent leg injury in the first quarter against the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday.

Brink was driving on Sun center Brionna Jones when she fell to the floor with a non-contact injury.

The Sparks announced that Brink has a knee injury, and she did not return.

“Cam has a knee injury and will be evaluated tomorrow,” Los Angeles Sparks coach Curt Miller said after the visiting Sparks’ 79-70 loss to the Sun at Uncasville, Conn.

Brink was selected second overall in the WNBA draft after starring at Stanford.

She is averaging 8.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and is an elite defensive presence.

Earlier this week, WNBA veteran Diana Taurasi, a notoriously harsh grader of rookies, spoke highly of Brink in an interview with Uproxx.

“She’s awesome. That kid’s got the best smile ever. She just has this energy about her. She has this ‘it’ factor when you’re around her, and there’s nothing better than when people don’t take themselves seriously, especially when you’re a badass,” Taurasi said.

“There’s nothing better than that. It’s the best quality to have. You cannot take yourself too serious.”

Brink is slated to compete in the three-on-three portion of the Olympics for Team USA, with teammates Cierra Burdick, Rhyne Howard and Hailey Van Lith — if she’s healthy.

Brink was emotional when she was named to the roster earlier this month.

“It feels absolutely surreal. I was not expecting this whatsoever, but I’ve worked very hard for this. I love the coaches, the committee, and everything, so I’m just beyond thankful,” Brink said.
