Tri not to flip out, but “The Simpsons” has predicted the future — again.
The beloved animated sitcom has enjoyed quite the reputation for seeing into the future during its 35-year run, teasing everything from Donald Trump as president to a failed attempt to recreate Willy Wonka’s chocolate world in real life, not to mention Diddy’s recent downfall.
Now, the discovery of a three-eyed fish in Greenland has die-hard fans of the show exclaiming once more, recalling the season two episode, “Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish,” The Mirror reported.
Broadcast all the way back in the fall of 1990, the episode pushes amoral nuclear power plant owner Mr. Burns toward a moment of reckoning, after he’s confronted with the reality that his polluting business has wreaked havoc on the environment, resulting in such abominations as a three-eyed fish.
A brisk online discussion began after somebody shared a photo of the IRL anomaly on Reddit.
“Three-eyed cod caught off the coast of Greenland,” the post was captioned.
“Took a few decades but The Simpsons nailed another one,” a Redditor replied.
“Wow. Like Blinky in The Simpsons,” said another.
“So Springfield was in Greenland!” said a third person, alluding to the ongoing joke that the location of Springfield, home of “The Simpsons,” has never been revealed.
“Yet another example of The Simpsons did it earlier,” someone said.
Just as many people appeared to be interested in how the actual fish came to be.
“But seriously, if the eye works, would there be a small chance of some evolutionary developments with three-eyed fish? Or does the eye use up too much energy,” one science-type person asked.
A poster claiming to be an expert explained: “What’s more than likely is that one of the three [eyes] is not working properly. You can see the fish is suffering from exophthalmia on the left eye, my guess is it’s probably not functional. It could even be the case that 2 out of 3 are not functional. I have seen many deformities with fish and in most cases the “extra bit” was not functional.”
