NYC still roasting — real-feel temps to hit triple digits this weekend
Heat-zapped New Yorkers flocked to beaches Friday as the Big Apple roasted — and forecasters warned that real-feel temperatures will soar into the triple digits over the weekend.
“We needed a day at the beach. It’s bad. It’s serious. So anything to cool down,” said Daisy Arenas, a 32-year-old NYPD cop who took her family to Coney Island Friday morning.
Meanwhile, eight sun-kissed lifeguards sweated through their running, push-ups and swimming drills at the Brooklyn beach — before striking a pose in swimsuits with their muscles flexed on the sizzling shoreline.
The mercury hit a sweltering 93 degrees on Friday afternoon as the fourth consecutive day of a much-hyped “heat dome” blasted the city with oppressive heat.
Temperatures were expected to reach a swampy high of 93 on Saturday, followed by 95 on Sunday, with real-feel temperatures climbing above 100 degrees, forecasters said.
“It’s only going to get more humid over the weekend,” said FOX Weather meteorologist Stephen McCloud.
New York City will likely reach a “technical heatwave” of three days in a row of 90 degrees or above.
“But the good news is it’s not record-breaking heat,” he said.
Monday will be slightly cooler with a high of 87 degrees.
On Friday, commuters waiting for trains were struck by a muggy wave of nearly 100-degree heat in some subway stations.
New Yorkers in search of a dip and breeze headed to parks and beaches for much-needed respite.
“It’s hot. It’s our day off of work. I like the heat, but I need my AC, when it’s hot like this,” said Francesca Zenner, a 29-year-old server who was sunning herself on the shores of Coney Island. “I’m here for a tan.”
“It’s hot in the sun, but I don’t mind it at the beach,” said Marita Sadu, 33-year-old dental hygienist living in Brooklyn.
But Frank Giannattasio, 41, a Marine veteran said the boiling Big Apple was nothing compared to places he’d been on missions.
“I’ve been in way hotter weather — Kuwait, Iraq,” said Giannattasio, who was cooling off at the beach with his family. “We stay hydrated, we eat well. As long as you’re prepared, you should be good.”
