38-year-old man killed, 2 others injured in broad-daylight stabbing on ‘out-of-control’ NYC street: cops
One person was killed and two people were injured in a broad-daylight stabbing on an East Village sidewalk Sunday evening, cops said.
A 38-year-old man was fatally stabbed in the neck while a 52-year-old woman was stabbed in the leg and a 31-year-old man knifed in the lower back near Avenue A and East 14th Street in Manhattan at around 5:45 p.m., police said.
All three victims were initially rushed to Bellevue Hospital where the 38-year-old victim succumbed to his wounds, authorities said.
The woman is in critical condition and the younger man is in stable condition.
A 30-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene, cops said. No charges have been filed against him so far.
A “cutting instrument” was also recovered, according to the NYPD.
Pools of blood soaked into the sidewalk as litter, clothers and other items were strewn about following the triple stabbing.
Following the fatal attack, Council Member Keith Powers called for a dedicated police presence in the area to curb frequent violence and other crimes — which he described as “out of control” and “madness.”
“The situation on 14th St is out of control… It’s unacceptable to continue to have the conditions on the street remain status quo,” he wrote in a statement.
“We need every elected official and agency working to solve these problems: A dedicated NYPD presence to curb illicit activities, continued enforcement of illegal vendors, on-going [sic] attention to trash and sanitation cleanup, and more,” Powers added.
More information about what motivated the stabbing was not immediately revealed by cops. It’s also unclear if there was a connection between the victims.
