Boy, 6, drowns in New Jersey day camp pool: ‘Absolutely devastated and heartbroken’

A 6-year-old boy drowned at a New Jersey day camp on Monday afternoon, according to officials.

The boy was found unresponsive in a pool at Liberty Lake Day Camp in Mansfield Township around 2 p.m., according to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office.

He was pulled out of the water by a lifeguard, and camp workers performed CPR on him.

The child was transported by ambulance to Virtua Hospital in Mount Holly, where he was pronounced dead, according to the prosecutor’s office.

It was the camp’s first day of the season, according to its website.

“We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken,” camp owner Andy Pritikin told camp families in a letter obtained by 6abc.com. 

“Our thoughts at this most difficult time are with our camper’s family, friends and loved ones — and we are respecting their privacy at this time,” he added.

The boy’s identity has not been released. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, officials said.

The Post has reached out to Liberty Lake for comment.

In his letter, Pritikin told the camp community that the facility has “three registered nurses on staff, 25 lifeguards certified in first aid/CPR/AED, and the Mansfield First Aid Squad located just down the street.

“Our goal is always to do everything possible to the best of our abilities to protect the campers and staff in our care,” he wrote.

The 60-acre camp, which offers summertime programs for children in kindergarten through 8th grade, has been open for more than 20 years, its website says.
